Qolşärif Mosque stands inside the Kazan Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Christian and Muslim landmarks coexist side by side. The original mosque was destroyed in 1552 when Ivan the Terrible conquered Kazan; the current structure was rebuilt and opened in 2005. Named after Qol Sharif, the imam who died defending the city, it is one of the largest mosques in Russia and a powerful symbol of Tatar Muslim identity.
