π Monastery of St. John, Patmos
Greece
About This Sacred Site
The island of Patmos is where St. John the Theologian is believed to have received and written the Book of Revelation (the Apocalypse) around 95 CE. The Cave of the Apocalypse, halfway up the hill, marks the exact spot where John is said to have heard the voice of God. Above it stands the imposing fortified Monastery of St. John the Theologian, founded in 1088 by Blessed Christodoulos. The monastery houses one of the most significant libraries in the Orthodox world, with manuscripts dating back over 900 years.
