🕌 Moulay Idriss II Shrine (Fes)
Morocco
About This Sacred Site
The Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II, located in the heart of the Fes medina, is the most visited religious site in Fes and one of the most venerated shrines in all of Morocco. Moulay Idriss II (791-828 CE), son of the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, is credited with founding the city of Fes and turning it into the spiritual and intellectual capital of Morocco. The shrine is surrounded by a horm (sanctuary area) where historically, criminals could seek refuge and animals could not be harmed. The interior, closed to non-Muslims, features elaborate zellij tilework, carved stucco, and a cedarwood dome. Moroccan women in particular visit the shrine to seek blessings for fertility, health, and family harmony.
