Morocco
About This Sacred Site
The Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University in Fes is recognized by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest continuously operating educational institution in the world. It was founded in 859 CE by Fatima al-Fihri, a woman from a wealthy Tunisian family, as a mosque that evolved into a major center of learning. Scholars including the Jewish philosopher Maimonides and the geographer al-Idrisi studied here. The mosque can accommodate 22,000 worshippers and features a stunning courtyard with intricate zellij tilework, carved stucco, and carved cedar wood — the three pillars of Moroccan decorative art. The university's library, recently restored, contains manuscripts dating back to the 9th century, including a 9th-century Quran written on camel skin.
