🏰 Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey
France
About This Sacred Site
Mont-Saint-Michel is one of Europe's most iconic pilgrimage sites, a gravity-defying abbey crowning a rocky tidal island off the Normandy coast. According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranches in 708 CE, commanding him to build a church on the summit. The abbey grew over centuries into a masterpiece of medieval architecture, with its Gothic spire reaching 170 meters above sea level. The surrounding bay experiences some of the highest tidal variations in Europe, historically making the pilgrimage perilous.
