Colombia
About This Sacred Site
The Sanctuary of Monserrate sits atop a 3,152-meter mountain overlooking Bogotá, Colombia's capital. Pilgrims have climbed the steep path to the summit since the 17th century to venerate the Señor Caído (Fallen Lord) — a 17th-century sculpture of Christ that is believed to have miraculous healing powers. The present neo-Gothic church was built in 1920. Visitors can reach the summit by a funicular railway, cable car, or the traditional pilgrim's path of over 1,500 steps.
