🕌 Masjid al-Quba
Saudi Arabia
About This Sacred Site
Masjid al-Quba in Medina is the first mosque ever built in Islamic history, its foundation stones laid by Prophet Muhammad himself upon his arrival from Mecca during the Hijra (migration) in 622 CE. The Quran describes it as 'a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day.' Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said that praying two rakahs (units of prayer) in Quba Mosque is equivalent to performing Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage). The mosque has been expanded and renovated many times, most recently into a grand modern structure, but its spiritual significance as Islam's first mosque remains paramount.
