🕌 Masjid al-Khandaq (Mosque of the Trench)
Saudi Arabia
About This Sacred Site
Masjid al-Khandaq (also known as Masjid al-Ahzab or the Seven Mosques) is a complex of small mosques on the site of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq) in 627 CE, one of the most crucial events in early Islamic history. Prophet Muhammad ordered a trench to be dug along the unprotected northern side of Medina to defend against a massive coalition of 10,000 enemies. The seven small mosques mark the positions where the Prophet and his companions prayed and strategized during the siege. The successful defense of Medina proved to be a turning point, establishing Islam as a lasting force in Arabia.
