Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg is one of the largest churches in the city, modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Built between 1801 and 1811, it houses the venerated Our Lady of Kazan icon, one of the most important icons in Russian Orthodoxy. The cathedral's sweeping colonnade of 96 columns embraces the public square, and it served as a monument to Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.
