The Jesuit Mission of La Santísima Trinidad del Paraná is the best-preserved of the Jesuit Reductions in Paraguay and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1706, the mission was part of the remarkable Jesuit experiment to create self-sufficient communities for the Guaraní indigenous people. The extensive ruins include a massive church with carved sandstone portals, a bell tower, a plaza, workshops, and Guaraní housing blocks. The missions were disbanded when the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish America in 1767.
