🕌 Hassan II Mosque (Casablanca)
Morocco
About This Sacred Site
The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is the largest mosque in Africa and the fifth-largest in the world, with a minaret that soars 210 meters — the tallest religious structure on Earth. Built dramatically on a platform extending over the Atlantic Ocean, the mosque was inspired by the Quranic verse 'the throne of God was upon the water.' Completed in 1993 after six years of construction by 10,000 artisans, the mosque can accommodate 105,000 worshippers (25,000 inside and 80,000 in the courtyard). The retractable roof opens to let worshippers pray under the stars, and a glass floor section allows views of the ocean waves below. It is one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors.
