About This Sacred Site
The Cathedral of Granada is the most recognizable landmark of Nicaragua's oldest colonial city, originally constructed in 1583 and rebuilt multiple times after destruction by pirates, wars, and William Walker's burning of the city in 1856. The current pale yellow neoclassical structure was completed in 1915 and dominates the central plaza. Granada itself was founded in 1524 and is the first European-style city in mainland America.
