About This Sacred Site
The Erbil Citadel in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq is an ancient fortified settlement built atop a tell that rises 25-30 meters above the surrounding plain. Continuously inhabited for over 6,000 years, it is one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in the world. The citadel has hosted Sumerian, Assyrian, and Islamic religious structures and contains multiple historic mosques and a hammam. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 and stands as a symbol of Iraq's multi-layered cultural heritage.
