βͺ Debre Bizen Monastery
Eritrea
About This Sacred Site
Debre Bizen is one of the most important Ethiopian Orthodox monasteries in Eritrea, dramatically perched at 2,480 meters on a cliff edge above the eastern escarpment overlooking the Red Sea coast. Founded in 1361 by Abuna Filippos, the monastery has been a center of Orthodox Christian learning and asceticism for over six centuries. The monastery houses ancient manuscripts, religious artifacts, and cross collections of immense historical value. By tradition, no female humans or animals are permitted on the monastery grounds. The steep climb to reach it through mountain terrain adds to its reputation as a place of pilgrimage and spiritual devotion.
