About This Sacred Site
Danilov Monastery, founded in 1282 by Prince Daniel of Moscow, is the oldest monastery in Moscow. Closed during the Soviet period and used as a juvenile detention facility, it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1983 and extensively restored to become the official residence of the Patriarch of Moscow. Its white-walled compound contains several churches, bell towers, and administrative buildings from the 17th through 19th centuries.
