About This Sacred Site
Clonmacnoise, situated on the banks of the River Shannon in County Offaly, was founded by St. Ciarán around 544 CE and became one of the most important monastic settlements in Ireland and Europe. For centuries it was a center of religion, learning, and craftsmanship, producing masterworks such as the Cross of the Scriptures and illuminated manuscripts. The site's ruins include cathedral remains, round towers, high crosses, and over 600 early Christian grave slabs.
