About This Sacred Site
The Residence of the Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans in Chernivtsi, now part of Chernivtsi National University, is a masterwork of historicist architecture designed by Czech architect Josef Hlávka and built between 1864 and 1882. The complex blends Byzantine, Moorish, and Gothic motifs and includes the Seminary Church with its extraordinary domed hall. Originally the seat of the Orthodox Metropolitan of Bukovina, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
