About This Sacred Site

The Catedral da Sé (Metropolitan Cathedral of São Paulo) is one of the largest Neo-Gothic cathedrals in the world and a symbol of São Paulo's spiritual and civic life. Construction began in 1913 and was not fully completed until 1967, with its two 92-meter towers finished in 2002. The cathedral can hold 8,000 worshippers and features a remarkable 10,000-pipe Italian organ, one of the largest in Latin America. The crypt beneath the cathedral contains the remains of notable figures including Tibiriçá, the indigenous chief who supported the Portuguese colonizers and helped found São Paulo. The building combines Gothic forms with Renaissance details and is located at the geographic heart of the city.
