Brazil
About This Sacred Site
The Basílica de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré in Belém, Pará, is the focal point of the Círio de Nazaré, the largest religious procession in Brazil and one of the largest in the world, drawing over 2 million participants on the second Sunday of October. The festival celebrates the miraculous discovery of a small statue of the Virgin of Nazareth by a rancher named Plácido in 1700 — according to tradition, the statue repeatedly returned to its original location when attempts were made to move it. The basilica, built in 1909 in a style inspired by St. Paul's in Rome, houses the venerated image. The Círio procession, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, combines Catholic devotion with Amazonian cultural traditions in a spectacular display of faith.
