About This Sacred Site
The Basilica di San Marino is the principal church of the Republic of San Marino, the world's oldest surviving republic. Built between 1826 and 1838 in neoclassical style, it houses the relics of Saint Marinus, the 4th-century Christian stonemason who founded the republic while fleeing religious persecution. The altar contains his remains, making it both the spiritual and symbolic heart of this tiny nation perched atop Mount Titano.
