About This Sacred Site
The Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth is the largest church in the Middle East, built over the grotto where tradition holds the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary to announce she would conceive Jesus β the event known as the Annunciation. The current basilica, completed in 1969, was designed by Italian architect Giovanni Muzio and features a distinctive lantern-shaped dome visible from across Nazareth. Its most remarkable feature is a collection of mosaic and painted panels donated by Catholic communities from around the world, each depicting the Virgin Mary in their own cultural style β from Japanese to Nigerian to Argentine. The grotto below the upper church is believed to have been Mary's home.
