About This Sacred Site
Antigua Guatemala, the former capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, contains an extraordinary collection of colonial-era churches, convents, and monasteries built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Many were damaged by the devastating 1773 earthquake that prompted the capital's relocation to present-day Guatemala City. Today, ruins like those of the Cathedral of San José, the Convent of Santa Clara, and the Church of La Merced stand alongside restored churches, creating one of the most atmospheric sacred landscapes in Latin America.
