⛪ Santo Tomás Church (Chichicastenango)
Guatemala
About This Sacred Site
The Church of Santo Tomás in Chichicastenango sits in the heart of the K'iche' Maya highlands of Guatemala. Built in 1540 atop a pre-Columbian temple platform, the church is a living example of religious syncretism: Maya spiritual leaders (ajq'ijab') burn copal incense and perform rituals on the same 18 front steps (representing the 18 months of the Maya calendar) where Catholic worshippers enter for Mass. The town is also where the Popol Vuh, the K'iche' creation epic, was transcribed.
