About This Sacred Site
Al-Maghtas, also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan, is recognized by UNESCO and most Christian denominations as the authentic site of Jesus's baptism by John the Baptist. Located on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, the site features remains of Byzantine-era churches, baptismal pools, and caves where John the Baptist is believed to have lived. Multiple popes have visited the site, which has been a Christian pilgrimage destination since the earliest centuries of the faith.
