About This Sacred Site
Togoville is a historic town on the northern shore of Lake Togo that gave its name to the entire nation. The town is a unique fusion of Vodun and Catholic spiritual traditions. It contains important Vodun shrines and is also home to a Marian pilgrimage site, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Lake, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared. The coexistence of Vodun altars and a Catholic basilica in the same small town exemplifies the spiritual syncretism characteristic of the Gulf of Guinea region.
