About This Sacred Site
The Basilica of Our Lady of Suyapa near Tegucigalpa is the most important Marian pilgrimage site in Honduras, housing a tiny 6-centimeter cedar statue of the Virgin Mary found by a laborer in 1747. The modern basilica was completed in the 1950s and draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each February for the feast of the Virgin of Suyapa, the patroness of Honduras. Countless miracles have been attributed to the small statue.
