About This Sacred Site
The Plain of Jars is a megalithic archaeological landscape in the Xiangkhouang Plateau of northeastern Laos, featuring thousands of massive stone jars scattered across the landscape. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the jars date from approximately 500 BCE to 500 CE and are believed to have served as funerary vessels or to hold food offerings for the dead. Local legend attributes the jars to a giant king who brewed rice wine in them to celebrate a great victory. The site remains spiritually significant to local communities.
