Our Lady of Kibeho is the site of reported Marian apparitions that began in 1981 when three schoolgirls claimed visions of the Virgin Mary. The apparitions were officially approved by the Catholic Church in 2001, making Kibeho the only Vatican-recognized Marian apparition site in Africa. The visionaries reported messages emphasizing prayer, repentance, and suffering — some visions are believed to have foretold the 1994 genocide.
