Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro is a remarkable Orthodox Christian site built into a near-vertical cliff face above the Zeta valley. Annually, thousands of Orthodox Christians undertake pilgrimages during the feast days of St Vasilije, particularly May 12, participating in liturgies that include the chanting of hymns from the Octoechos, an Eastern Orthodox liturgical book. The site is renowned for the rite of anointing with holy oil from the saint's tomb, considered a sacramental act for physical and spiritual healing. The monastery’s location, carved into the white limestone cliff, symbolizes the ascetic ideal of withdrawal from the world, reflecting St Vasilije’s own hermitic practices.
