Nidhe Israel Synagogue in Bridgetown is one of the oldest synagogues in the Western Hemisphere, originally built in 1654 by Sephardic Jews who fled the Inquisition in Brazil. The synagogue was rebuilt in 1833 after hurricane damage, fell into disuse, and was beautifully restored and reconsecrated in 2008. The adjacent museum and mikveh (ritual bath) provide insight into the significant role Jewish settlers played in developing the Barbadian sugar industry. The site is part of the UNESCO-listed historic Bridgetown.
