⛪ Monastery of São Bento (Rio de Janeiro)
Brazil
About This Sacred Site
The Monastery of São Bento, perched on a hill in downtown Rio de Janeiro, conceals behind its plain facade one of the most spectacular church interiors in the Americas. Founded in 1590 by Benedictine monks, the current church was completed in the late 17th century and its interior is entirely covered in gold leaf, with elaborately carved altars, statues, and paintings representing the height of Brazilian baroque art. The contrast between the austere exterior and the overwhelmingly ornate interior reflects the Benedictine philosophy of inner spiritual richness. The monastery's monks still chant Gregorian plainsong during Sunday Mass, attracting visitors from around the world. The monastery also produces and sells its own products including cakes and beer.
