The Sanctuary of Meritxell is the most important religious site in Andorra, dedicated to the Virgin of Meritxell, patroness of the country. After a devastating fire in 1972, the renowned Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill designed the striking modern replacement. Every September 8th, Andorrans celebrate their national day with a pilgrimage to this site.
