π Langi Royal Tombs
Tonga
About This Sacred Site
The Langi are massive terraced stone tombs near Mu'a on Tongatapu, built for the Tu'i Tonga, the supreme rulers of the Tongan Empire. These enormous stepped stone platforms, some using coral limestone blocks weighing several tonnes, date from approximately the 13th century onward. The largest, Langi Tauhala, was the burial place of the 29th Tu'i Tonga. The tombs remain tapu (sacred) and represent the spiritual power of the ancient Tongan royal lineage.
