βͺ Lake Bled Island Church
Slovenia
About This Sacred Site
The Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary sits on the only natural island in Slovenia, in the middle of the stunning glacial Lake Bled. The current Baroque church dates to the 17th century, though a pre-Christian temple stood here first. Visitors reach the island by pletna, a traditional wooden flat-bottomed boat, and tradition holds that ringing the church's wishing bell grants a wish. Grooms also traditionally carry their brides up the 99 steps to the church door.
