Kykkos Monastery, founded around 1080, is the largest and wealthiest monastery in Cyprus, located at 1,318 meters elevation in the Troodos Mountains. Spiritual Significance

Founded around 1080 by Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, the monastery houses an icon of the Virgin Mary traditionally attributed to the Apostle Luke, which is permanently veiled, as legend holds that unveiling it causes blindness or death. This icon is central to Orthodox Christian veneration and is believed to possess miraculous healing powers, attracting pilgrims who travel annually on August 15 to observe the Dormition of the Theotokos feast. The monastery follows the Byzantine Rite, with monks performing daily liturgies according to the Typikon, emphasizing the Jesus Prayer and chanting Psalms. Pilgrims participate in the Artoklasia service here, which includes the blessing of bread, wine, and oil, symbolizing the sustenance provided by the Theotokos. The monastery also preserves liturgical manuscripts dating back to the 12th century, underscoring its theological and historical significance within Eastern Orthodoxy.
