About This Sacred Site
Hukuru Miskiy (Old Friday Mosque) in Malé is the oldest mosque in the Maldives, built in 1658 during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I. The mosque is constructed entirely of coral stone and features some of the finest lacquer work and wood carving in the Maldives. Its interior panels are adorned with Arabic calligraphy from the Quran. The mosque is surrounded by a cemetery with elaborately carved tombstones, and the adjacent minaret (Munnaaru) is a distinctive cylindrical tower. The site is on the UNESCO Tentative List.
