About This Sacred Site
The Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing over 6,000 rock engravings dating from the Upper Paleolithic to the medieval period. Located on Azerbaijan's Caspian coast, the petroglyphs depict ritual dances, hunting scenes, boats, warriors, and astronomical symbols that provide insight into the spiritual beliefs of prehistoric peoples. The site also features mud volcanoes and natural gas vents that may have contributed to ancient fire-worship traditions. Thor Heyerdahl noted similarities between Gobustan's boat carvings and Norwegian petroglyphs.
