Vanuatu
About This Sacred Site
The Chief Roi Mata's Domain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising three locations on central Vanuatu's islands: Roi Mata's residence on Mangaas, the cave where he died on Lelepa, and his burial site on Artok (Hat Island). Chief Roi Mata was a powerful 13th-century paramount chief who, according to oral tradition, brought peace to warring clans by establishing a new social order. His burial site, excavated in 1967, revealed a mass grave consistent with oral traditions. The sites remain tabu (sacred) to this day.
