🕊️ Cathedral of Brasília
Brazil
About This Sacred Site
The Cathedral of Brasília, designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1970, is one of the most striking religious buildings of the 20th century. Its hyperboloid structure consists of 16 curved concrete columns, each weighing 90 tonnes, arranged in a circle and reaching upward like hands in prayer or a crown of thorns. The spaces between the columns are filled with stained glass, flooding the interior with colored light. Visitors enter through a dark underground passage and emerge into the luminous nave — a deliberate progression from darkness to light symbolizing spiritual awakening. Three angels by sculptor Alfredo Ceschiatti float suspended from the ceiling. The cathedral seats 4,000 and is surrounded by a shallow reflecting pool.
