About This Sacred Site
Uxmal is considered the finest example of the Puuc style of Maya architecture, characterized by intricate geometric stone mosaics. The Pyramid of the Magician, with its distinctive rounded corners and oval base, is unique among Maya pyramids and is associated with a legend about a dwarf magician who built it in a single night. The Governor's Palace is regarded by many scholars as one of the most beautiful buildings ever erected in the Americas. The entire site is dedicated to Chaac, the rain god, whose long-nosed masks appear hundreds of times across the facades.
