In the 1960s, due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the creation of Lake Nasser, the entire temple was carefully dismantled and relocated block by block to Agilkia Island to prevent submersion. This UNESCO-led salvage operation completed in 1980 preserved the temple’s intricate reliefs and pylons. The strategic location near the First Cataract made it a key religious hub linking Upper Egypt and Nubia.

Spiritual Significance

Dedicated to the goddess Isis, the temple was the focal point of the annual 'Beautiful Festival of the Valley,' during which priests conducted nighttime rituals to honor the goddess’s protective and healing powers. The temple's reliefs portray the daily rites of offering and purification performed by the priesthood, including libations and the chanting of hymns from the Temple Hymns of Philae. Pilgrims sought blessings for fertility, protection from illness, and safe passage in the afterlife, invoking Isis as a mother goddess and healer.
