About This Sacred Site
Persepolis, known as Takht-e Jamshid in Persian, was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire built by Darius the Great beginning in 518 BCE. The site served as a center for Nowruz celebrations and Zoroastrian rituals where representatives of subject nations brought tributes. Although largely destroyed by Alexander the Great in 330 BCE, the magnificent ruins include the Gate of All Nations, the Apadana Palace, and elaborate bas-reliefs. It remains a powerful symbol of Iranian cultural identity and pre-Islamic heritage.
