About This Sacred Site

Monte Albán, rising 400 meters above the Oaxaca Valley floor, was the ancient capital of the Zapotec civilization and one of Mesoamerica's earliest cities. The massive main plaza was created by leveling the entire mountaintop, an extraordinary feat of engineering. The site served as the political, economic, and ceremonial center of the Zapotec for over 1,500 years. Its temples, ball courts, and tombs with elaborate murals reveal a sophisticated civilization with advanced astronomical knowledge and one of the earliest writing systems in the Americas.
